Spiced Rum

I talked of its flavours,

brown sugar and ginger,

cardamom, vanilla and clove,

of its companionship

on those wintry nights,

the zest, the solace,

the warmth, the inspiration.

And reading the glow in my eyes

and my plaintive tone,

you said that I must have

loved her very much.

We fell silent for a time, then,

you impressed by the depth

of my metaphor,

me ashamed that I was only

talking about a drink.
